How is ADHD Diagnosed?

ADHD is diagnosed by a clinical interview with a mental health professional who is trained to evaluate and diagnose. Most commonly, the assessment is performed by psychiatrists, psychologists or neurologists who are specialized in the field. Neuropsychological testing can suggest the diagnosis but not in the absence of one of these medical professional’s assessment.

What Causes ADHD?

The exact cause of ADHD has yet to be determined. While there are many theories, the consensus is that it likely involves the following:

Allergies
The overwhelming majority of those with ADHD have environmental and/or food allergies

Genetics
ADHD commonly runs in families, suggesting genetics play a key role in causing this condition.

Environment
The individual's environment may be a cause. One example of this is lead exposure during childhood.

Developmental Factors
Being born prematurely or to a mother who smoked, used illicit drugs or drank alcohol increases the risk for ADHD.

Do Allergies Cause ADHD?

The answer is absolutely! Studies have conclusively shown that allergy symptoms are directly linked to a higher risk of ADHD.
