Eczema is a group of inflammatory skin conditions that causes rashes, blisters, severe itching, dry skin and skin infections. What are the Symptoms of Eczema?

This condition can appear anywhere on the body. It varies from patient to patient with symptoms that can include:

Painful, dry, cracked skin
Red rash
Intense itching, oftentimes severe, interfering with sleep
Burning, blistering skin
Open, crusted, or weeping sores
Thickened skin
Irritated, sensitive skin from scratching

Some individuals may get periodic “flare ups”, while others will have it chronically.

What Causes Eczema?

The causes of eczema are poorly understood, and are found to involve a complex combination of both genetic and environmental factors including:

Family inheritance
Food and environmental allergens
Extremes of hot and cold weather, as well as high and low humidity
Sweat from physical exercise
Hormonal influences during pregnancy and menses
Irritants from soaps, shampoos, and laundry detergents
Stress can worsen symptoms

Who is at Risk for Eczema?
Individuals at most risk for eczema include:

Having environmental or food allergies
Having one or more parents with eczema
Living in areas with extreme temperatures
Living in areas with extreme humidity

How is Eczema Diagnosed?

It is most commonly a clinical diagnosis made simply by close examination of the skin. In some cases, a skin biopsy may be necessary to make the diagnosis.

How is Eczema Treated?

The standard, but less than ideal treatments for eczema, include the following:

1. Topical steroid creams and skin moisturizers typically only help those with mild symptoms. They require frequent trips to the dermatologist for follow up visits and prescription refills. They don’t provide a cure and need to be taken for years. Side effects of daily steroid creams can include the worsening of skin dryness and the increased likelihood of secondary skin infections.

2. Newer treatments include a group of medications called biologics. Three utilized for eczema are Dupixent, Rinvoq, and Adbry. They work by weakening or calming an overactive immune system, which causes the patient’s eczema. They can be effective, but cost thousands of dollars a month and do not cure eczema.
